Chris Perez - Sound
The chapter on sound was full of terms that I had never heard of, but
that did not get in the way when it came to learning how sound plays a
role in writing poetry. Understanding the terms was a bit hard because
sometimes I could not quiet get my grasp on certain sounds. This could
be because I am reading the sounds incorrectly, making them seem like
they do not belong in the categories they were placed in. Reading Robert
Frost's poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, was very
helpful because sound plays a big role in how the poem is interpreted.
The main point is how a word sounds, and not what is means. Just like in
the chapter with "rock" and "stone". They mean the same thing but do
not make you feel the same way about the object. "Rock" sounds more
rough than saying "stone", which sounds smooth. This is why sound is so
important in poetry. It makes the difference between sounding rude and
harsh, and sounding nich and smooth. These being only two examples of
how sound can be incorporate with other techniques to improve one's
poetry.
